UMBWE ROUTE (7DAYS/6NIGHTS)
Umbwe is steep, short route, very remote and quiet, it has beautiful forest though poor in acclimatization due to rapid ascent of all the routes. Umbwe is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain, being steeper made this route very physically taxing and requires serious, experienced and enduring trekkers hence termed as the dangerous route. The route is evergreen all year round and experiences much rainfall in the course of the year, scenic traverse to Barafu. Camping, fully catered camping only. ITINERARY DETAILS
DAY 1
UMBWE GATE (1650m) to UMBWE CAMP (2940m) After a hearty breakfast at the lodge or hotel around Moshi/Arusha, picked by our driver guides staff members with packed picnic lunch, drive to MACHAME park gate 50 minutes’ drive and do the registration formalities, afterthen proceeds to UMBWE GATE via the village dotted with coffee farms and banana plantations. On reaching the gate proceed to UMBWE CAMP (2940M) Though steep, short, very remote and quite it has beautiful forest and is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain being steeper made this route very physically taxing and requires experienced and enduring trekker. DAY 2
UMBWE CAMP (2940m) to BARRANCO CAMP (3976m) On day 2 the trek continues to follow the rockier terrain with sparse undergrowth and straggly, moss-covered tree. As we hike higher, glimpses of Kilimanjaro can be seen. The path flattens as we approach Barranco valley. We will also pass through the senecio forest. This route is evergreen all year round and experiences much precipitation in the course of the year. DAY 3
BARRANCO CAMP (3976m) to KARANGA CAMP (3995m) Scramble/shuffle easily to the top of the great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridges to the Karanga Valley campsite all these short hikes are purely meant for acclimatization couping with the mountain’s environment in advance. Hot lunch will be supplied at the camp. Habitat- alpine desert Temperature- cold Distance-± 5km Time-±4-5 hours Dinner and overnight stay at Karanga camp .
DAY 4
KARANGA CAMP (3995m) to BARAFU CAMP (4673m) After a hearty breakfast at the camp, with the packed lunch at picnic, the trail ascends a ridge to a campsite by the Barafu hut, a location which seems almost bare, and carrying little vegetation cover. At this point one has the great opportunities of viewing the most famous peaks of the Kilimanjaro Mountain, the KIBO and MAWENZI. At this point we make sure that we prepare ourselves well mentally and physically by rest and enjoy an early dinner waiting for the summit attempt day. DAY 5
BARAFU CAMP (4673m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) (summit) Wake up in the midnight, after taking tea and biscuits we shuffle off into the night mentally fit and enduring as this portion is very challenging though our guides and the entire crew will ensure that you make it to the summit by doing this there will be short frequent breaks. On reaching the Stella Point you will be rewarded by a magnificent sunrise. Finally, arrive at UHURU PEAK, Africa’s Highest Point, by named the roof of Africa. Habitat- arctic Temperature- very cold Distance-± 5km Time-±7-8 hours DESCENT
From UHURU PEAK (5895m) to MWEKA CAMP (3068m) After reaching the summit and got a reward of the beautiful sunrise, breathtaking views of the entire surroundings, celebrations of making it to the top roof of African continent and taking magnificent pictures all of these are to be done in 20-40 minutes, descend down to Mweka Hut Campsite, passing and have a stopover at Barrafu for a hot lunch. As we climb down the mountain we enjoy our last diner of the mountain and here we get a well-earned sleep. Habitat- rainforest Temperature- moderate/normal Distance-± 12km Time-±4-6 hours Dinner and overnight stay at Mweka camp .
DAY 6
From MWEKA CAMP (3068m) to MWEKA GATE (1640m) After a hearty breakfast at the camp descent down to Mweka Gate, at this lower elevation, the conditions can be wet and muddy from the gate proceeds to Mweka Village taking about an hour. Meet DASSIE team members with the vehicle and transfer you to Arusha/Moshi for a well-earned rest and sleep. Habitat- rainforest Temperature- normal Distance-± 10km Time-±3-4 hours .
DAY 7
After a hearty breakfast at the lodge/hotel transfer to K.I.A or similar to catch a flight back home or to any other destination. .
